How can editorial design explore the work of graphic design practice?
Student publication
This magazine uses an A2 spread size to celebrate the work of six speakers who gave talks to our Design for Visual Communication class. The challenge was to take the work of the graphic designers and present my own visual interpretation of their work. I mixed images of their work with my own photography.
This publication uses the concept of ‘the new old’, relating to the use of graphic design as either an act of creating, rewriting or celebrating memory. I took photos at Thamesmead, a Brutalist housing estate in South London. Azkidenz Grotesk and and exposed grid mimic the Brutalism architecture photography.
The front and back cover features a 3D typographic illustration of the magazine title, created as a building elevation in the modelling program SketchUp. White and black ink on the black paper cover gives a spot varnish effect.
